Main Program
October 5–10, 2023
This year’s festival theme, “EXPRESSION—MEANING,” explores the spectrum of performativity aesthetics in Lithuanian music.
It is not quite opera or theater, nor performance art or audiovisual work. Yet, this kind of music already transcends the boundaries of a traditional composition or concert. By merging with other media and art forms—and often employing unconventional creative practices—it blurs boundaries, frequently venturing into the realm of interdisciplinary art, balancing on the edges of categories, or even creating entirely new phenomena.
In the festival program, performativity emerges as a mode of expression, a structural form, media complementing the music, or perhaps even a distinct and as-yet-undefined genre. It may simply offer a different kind of relationship with the audience. Whatever the case, it is a deliberate approach to realizing the artistic concept. The chosen methods are far from random—they generate specific meanings, enrich the work with multiple contexts, and often pair the music with visual elements or performative actions. Each component or combination of elements acts as a guide, leading the listener toward a deeper understanding and a more impactful experience of the musical work.

International Program
December 13–17, 2023
For the first time in its history, the festival presents an international program—creating a platform for the exchange of ideas between Lithuanian and global artists, as well as between local and global trends in contemporary music.
The international program features performances by foreign artists and showcases works by composers from Lithuania and other countries, along with collaborative creative projects. While maintaining the festival’s core mission—to promote contemporary Lithuanian music—this year’s program connects Lithuanian creativity with global musical contexts.
This year’s international program highlights an unconventional instrumental combination: a string quartet and a trombone. Embarking on this musical adventure are the string quartet “Chordos” and renowned trombone virtuoso Mike Svoboda (USA/Germany), who have already shared the stage on multiple occasions. The program includes works by Lithuanian composers Marius Baranauskas (world premiere!) and Ramūnas Motiekaitis, as well as British composer Benedict Mason and one of the most influential figures in 20th-century European music—Karlheinz Stockhausen, with whom M. Svoboda collaborated closely for over a decade.
