Emma Jane LLoyd | INTROSPECTION
Emma Jane Lloyd (violin, live electronics)

The programme presents the violin as an instrument of investigation, opening up new perspectives on sound. Extended techniques, distorted sound, elements of noise and chance, and live electronics become equal creative components and active partners in a dialogue between the violin and technology.
The violin takes on a personified role – an attentive observer and investigator that, through its sensitive relationship with electronics, reflects the anxiety, contradictions, existential fragility, and fragmentation of our time. The programme critically engages with contemporary cultural and social reality while searching for hopeful forms of resilience.
The concert is presented in collaboration with “Druskininkai Artists’ Residence”.

Divers
(premiere)
Loosely based on a poem by Adrienne Rich, the work immerses us in the metaphorical “wreckage” produced by society's failures, injustices, and cruelty. The violin is personified as a “diver”, while the electronic soundscape represents the ocean and the wreckage submerged within it. The work reflects on contemporary crises, the importance of introspection when confronting them, and the hope that can emerge through deep self-examination and resilience. It also calls for social injustice to be addressed through empathy and organised action.

Nebula
(2021)
The idea for “Nebula” emerged from observing the confusion and anxiety of contemporary world events and from a desire to create a sonic experience that would allow us to pause for a moment amid pervasive uncertainty. The Latin word nebula means “mist” and, in many traditions, is associated with a primordial state that existed before the creation of the world. Mist can also be understood as a metaphor for thought and spiritual contemplation. Clearly structured yet meditative, the work is written for a single violinist, who represents an archetypal figure attempting to enter into dialogue with the chaos of the contemporary world.

Mishra Pilu
(2022)
“Mishra Pilu” was written for Emma Jane Lloyd and is based on the Pilu raga of Indian classical music. The Sanskrit word mishra means “mixed” and refers to the possibility of incorporating melodic lines from other ragas. The composer works with slow, almost imperceptible changes grounded in strict structures. The piece brings together different emotional states - joy, sadness, longing, and tenderness. “Mishra Pilu” was premiered by Emma Jane Lloyd in Edinburgh in 2022. In 2023, it was named the best Lithuanian electroacoustic work of 2022 and also received the Audience Award.
Artist
Emma Jane Lloyd is an international performer, improviser, composer, and artist. She performs as a soloist and in small ensembles, frequently working with live electronics and collaborating with composers.
Her music combines strings, vocals, electronics, and objects, embracing indeterminacy, instrumental agency, and unexpected sonic outcomes. As an improviser, Lloyd often works with quiet and intimate sound, exploring the innate timbral qualities of the violin and uncovering sounds that often remain hidden within the instrument. Her debut solo album, “Mue”, was released in 2025.
