Twenty Fingers Duo (Lithuania)

GBSR Duo (United Kingdom)

INTERNATIONAL
PROGRAM

The concert program originated from the “In Between Silence” residency, initiated by Lithuania’s “Twenty Fingers Duo” and the UK’s “GBSR Duo” to promote international connections and creative collaboration in contemporary music. The performers present compositions developed during the residency by artists from both countries, coming together in a unified concert experience.

The term “hyphen” comes from the Greek word meaning “together.” The title of the program not only encapsulates the spirit of the residency but also reflects the themes expressed by the composers in their works.

Julius Aglinskas’s “Synchronicity” draws a direct parallel to C. G. Jung’s concept of meaningful coincidences between psychological and physical events that lack a causal relationship. Meanwhile, Lawrence Dunn’s “Double Sonata” speaks to international solidarity with individuals forced to live under conditions of violence, occupation, or exile.

The residency is funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture, the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Vaughan Williams and Francis Routh Trusts, and LATGA. Partners include the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, the “Music Autumn” and “Iš Arti” festivals, Sapieha Palace, LRT Klasika, the Lithuanian Composers’ Union, the cultural agency “Meno genas,” and “Pas Mus Restoranas.”

TWENTY FINGERS DUO

Vadovas – Vykintas Baltakas

Lora Kmieliauskaitė – violin
Arnas Kmieliauskas – violoncello

The contemporary music ensemble was founded in Vilnius in 2016, by sister and brother violinist Lora Kmieliauskaitė and cellist Arnas Kmieliauskas.

After graduating in classical music and becoming laureates of numerous international and national competitions, the members of Twenty Fingers Duo actively participate in and initiate contemporary art projects, with a strong focus on collaboration with artists from other fields. The main task of the ensemble’s musical activity is to foster and promote Lithuanian music, while the gamut of their activities ranges from standard concert appearances and interdisciplinary performances to collaborations in contemporary opera, theatre, dance, and film productions.

The music they perform emerges at the intersection of extended playing techniques and graphic scores.  In its live performances, Twenty Fingers Duo places great emphasis on the stage setup and the mingling between light and darkness. In 2020, they released their debut album Performa. In the recent years, they have released two more albums – Dualitas and Two Sides: West/East – and an interdisciplinary stage work Orpheus, Eurydice, which was nominated in four categories of the Performing Arts Awards ‘Golden Crosses’ and won the award for the best interdisciplinary work of the year in the Lithuanian Composers’ Competition (both in 2023).

GBSR DUO

Vadovas – Vykintas Baltakas

George Barton – percussion
Siwan Rhys – piano

GBSR Duo – George Barton (percussion) and Siwan Rhys (piano) – combines two of the UK’s finest young contemporary chamber instrumentalists. The duo has built its reputation on a combination of exceptional interpretations of the existing piano-percussion repertoire, committed performances of ambitious new commissions, and inventive collaborations.

Known for their fearless, intense and boundary-crossing performances, GBSR’s work ranges from the twentieth-century modernism of Stockhausen and Ustvolskaya to music by Brian Eno and Aphex Twin; from the exquisite delicacy of composers like Morton Feldman, Eva-Maria Houben and Barbara Monk Feldman to the experimental and cross-genre work of Oliver Leith, CHAINES and Angharad Davies.

With a keen emphasis on commissioning and repertoire-building complemented by the respect and trust of composers, GBSR’s recent world premieres include works from Eva-Maria Houben, CHAINES, Christopher Fox, Angharad Davies, Oliver Leith, Tim Parkinson, Laurence Osborn and many others, and European and UK premieres of works by Nicole Lizée, Barbara Monk Feldman, Lisa Illean, Eric Wubbels and others. Meanwhile their interest in cross-disciplinary work has led to ongoing collaborations with Angharad Davies, Dejan Mrdja, Cameron Graham and other artists.

GBSR Duo is an hcmf// Fielding Talent artist.
